Obama, Buses and Free Food

Well, I don't think I can even describe in words how ridiculous the elections were. We stayed up all night and all were falling asleep in class the next day, but it was completely worth it. Every time a new state came in we would all just get so excited. I know that in twenty years I will remember exactly where I was and how I was feeling when the first African American was elected president. We were all so delirious that the entire thing seemed completely surreal, but it was not a dream and I have strong hope that things in the US have taken a turn for the better.

On another note I am incredible disappointed and angered by the decisions the state of CA made. I feel as though almost every prop I voted on went the other way, but at least we'll be able to hopefully make these changes sooner than later....and hopefully the train from LA to San Fran will be passed ASAP :]

So school this week was hard work as usual. Tuesday night earlier I went on an adventure in Jerusalem searching for the mall and ended up taking the bus line the wrong way, but because I got lost I now feel comfortable taking the 18 all over Jeru without getting lost...more or less.

On Thursday, Elie, Danny and I went back to the garden. We dug up a bunch of holes for the planting that would happen on Friday and then we got to plant vegetables! I planted lettuce and helped plant sprouts. It was very exciting. After the garden, Elie and I went to her friends who lived near by to do laundry. We had about two loads and threw in one with our dirty clothes from the garden. However, little did we know washers and driers in Israel are VERY different than at home. The washer is tiny and takes about 2 hours to run and the drier is even slower. Unfortunately we thought this process would only take about 2 hours, not four, because we had a TA session for our middle eastern studies course that night. However, since our clothes were in the laundry and we were sitting around in towels, we didn't really have any other option than to wait or our laundry. We finally took everything out, threw on clothes that were still damp and took a cab from Emek Rafaim back to our base. Emek is about a 20 mintue walk and a 3 minute cab ride, but we didn't want to take any chances considering we were already very late to the session. It was quite an adventure.

Friday afternoon my friend Naomi and I headed off to the Jerusalem central bus station for our free weekend. We went to Kiriat Ono, which is a suburb of Tel Aviv to visit my cousins for the weekend. We got on the right bus (yay!) and 45 minutes later, my cousin Michal picked us up. We got there and Naomi and I took a 3 hour nap (we are quite sleep deprived all the time :] )
and then we all went out for a nice dinner. It was this Italian place called Spaghettim and it was SO good and we had this INCREDIBLE chocolate cake dish for dessert....mmmmm!! Then we went back and we went to sleep and slept until 12 the next day. It was incredible.

Saturday we celebrated my twin cousins 21st birthday and all these relatives of theirs came over and we ate and hung out and celebrated all day. It was absolutely lovely. That night their cousin on the other side was heading back to Jerusalem so we got a free ride back and didn't have to take the bus! We also got to do our laundry. It's so interesting all the small things that I took advantage of at home that I appreciate SO much here. (for example a free meal, big shower, free ride, lots of sleep, free laundry, free anything etc. ) We got back at around 12 and went out. As usual I didn't get a lot of sleep.

This morning (which was really around noon, cause we don't have classes on Sunday), a few of us went to burgers bar for lunch. I had this huge, delicious crispy chicken salad. I am going to miss being able to eat Kosher food everywhere SO much when I get back to the states. It is such a luxury to have so many options and actually get to eat chicken. I'm sure it would be way worse if I ate red meat, so luckily I'll only have to wean myself off of chicken when I get home.

A few of us then went to find the American Apparel in Jerusalem (YAYY!!) and spent more money than I should have, but on clothes that I know will be all that I wear for the next year.

Now I'm back at base doing homework getting ready for another busy week. I have my first test this week!

2 WEEKS UNTIL GREECE AND BULGARIA :]
